Bridging open work permits: the coverage gap most applicants miss.

A bridging open work permit exists to solve one specific problem: your current work permit expires before IRCC finishes processing your permanent residence application. Done right, it’s a seamless handoff. Done late, it’s a gap in status that can undo months of progress.

Why the gap exists in the first place

Permanent residence processing takes months, sometimes longer than the validity left on a closed work permit. IRCC built the BOWP specifically so applicants already in the queue aren’t forced to stop working or leave the country while their file is being decided.

The 4-month window nobody tells you about

You become eligible to apply once your current permit has 4 months or less remaining — but only if you already have a valid Acknowledgement of Receipt for your permanent residence application. Applicants who wait too long, or who file the BOWP before their AOR arrives, end up with a rejected application and no runway left to fix it.

The applicants who lose status over this almost always had a valid case — they just filed on the wrong side of a date they didn’t know mattered.
