THE BASICS
What is a bridging open work permit?
It is an open work permit for people who have applied for permanent residence from inside Canada and whose current work permit is about to end. It bridges the gap, so you can keep working for any employer until a decision on your PR.
- Who
- In-Canada PR applicants with a work permit about to expire
- Key step
- PR application already in process
- Permit type
- Open
- Timing
- Apply before your permit expires
When to apply
- 1
You submit your PR application
Most routes require you to be waiting on an in-Canada PR application.
- 2
Your IRCC acknowledgement arrives
Some streams need confirmation that your application passed the first check.
- 3
Apply while your work permit is still valid
If you apply before it expires you can usually keep working while the bridging permit is processed.
Work permit already expired?
You may still have options through restoration, but you cannot work until you are authorized. Contact us the same day.
Is your PR application through Express Entry or a PNP?
Both can work, but the exact requirements differ. We check yours against your stream.
Want to work for a new employer?
A bridging permit is open, so once approved you are not tied to one employer.
