THE BASICS
What is a visitor record?
A visitor record is the document that extends how long you may stay in Canada as a visitor. Your authorized stay is usually up to six months, and you can ask for more time before it ends.
- Apply
- At least 30 days before your stay ends
- Where
- Online, from inside Canada
- You need
- A valid reason and enough funds
- While you wait
- You can usually stay
When to apply
- 1
2 months before your stay ends
A good time to start preparing, especially if you may need documents from home.
- 2
At least 30 days before
The point by which you should have applied, to stay protected while IRCC decides.
- 3
After you apply
You can usually remain in Canada under maintained status until a decision.
Already past your authorized stay?
You may be able to restore your status within 90 days, but you must stop doing anything not allowed to a visitor. Speak to us immediately.
Want to work or study instead?
Visitors can sometimes apply for other permits from inside Canada. We look at what is possible for you.
