THE BASICS
What is a study permit?
A study permit is the document that lets you study at a Canadian school for more than six months. It is separate from a visa: your permit sets how long you may study, while a visa or eTA only lets you enter Canada.
- You need
- A letter of acceptance from a designated school
- Most applicants also need
- A provincial attestation letter
- Funds
- Proof you can pay tuition and living costs
- Where to apply
- Online, from inside or outside Canada
Before you apply
- 1
Choose a designated school
Only schools on the official list can host international students.
- 2
Get your acceptance and attestation
Your school issues the acceptance letter; most applicants also need a provincial attestation letter.
- 3
Prove your funds and your plan
Show you can support yourself, and explain clearly why this program fits your goals.
- 4
Apply, give biometrics, wait for the decision
We file the complete application and track it until you hear back.
Already have a refused study permit?
A refusal is not the end. We review the officer’s reasons, fix what was weak, and tell you honestly whether to reapply.
Applying from inside Canada?
Some visitors and workers can apply for a study permit without leaving. Rules differ, so check with us before you start a course.
Bringing a spouse or children?
Family members may qualify for their own permits. We plan them together so no one’s timeline is left behind.
