THE BASICS
What is the Parents and Grandparents Program?
Canadian citizens and permanent residents can sponsor their parents and grandparents for permanent residence. Spaces are limited, so IRCC invites a set number of sponsors each year to apply, usually after they show interest.
- Who sponsors
- Citizens and PRs with enough income
- Intake
- Limited, by invitation
- Income
- Must be met for 3 consecutive years
- Commitment
- Financial support for 20 years
How it works
- 1
Check your income
You must meet the required level for your family size, backed by tax documents.
- 2
Show your interest
IRCC’s process for expressing interest and receiving an invitation changes from year to year.
- 3
Apply when invited
You have a short window to submit a complete sponsorship and PR application.
Not invited?
Invitations are limited. In the meantime the Super Visa lets your parents stay in Canada for years at a time.
Super VisaIncome not quite enough yet?
We look at what counts and how long until you qualify, and whether a co-signer can help.
Sponsoring a parent who has other children?
Other family members can sometimes be included. We map who is eligible to be on the application.
