THE BASICS
What is spousal and child sponsorship?
Canadian citizens and permanent residents can sponsor a spouse, common-law or conjugal partner, and dependent children for permanent residence. Sponsorship needs the sponsor and the applicant to both qualify and the relationship to be genuine.
- Who can be sponsored
- Spouse, partner, dependent children
- Key test
- A genuine relationship
- Two routes
- Inside Canada or outside Canada
- Typical wait
- Often around a year
How it works
- 1
Choose the route
Inside Canada (if the applicant is here) or outside Canada, each with its own rules.
- 2
Submit both applications together
The sponsor’s application and the PR application go in as one package.
- 3
Respond to requests and wait for a decision
We handle follow-up requests, interviews and medical or police checks.
Together a short time, or met online?
Officers look at the whole history, not how long you have been together. We help present your evidence fully.
Applicant in Canada on a temporary permit?
You may be able to apply for an open work permit while waiting. Rules change, so we check what applies today.
Previously refused?
We look at the reasons for refusal and tell you if there is a stronger way to apply or appeal.
